Landscaping in Belconnen

The district takes in Aranda, Belconnen, Bruce, Charnwood, Cook, Dunlop, Evatt, Florey, Flynn, Fraser, Giralang, Hawker, Higgins, Holt, Kaleen, Latham, Lawson, Macgregor, Macnamara, Macquarie, McKellar, Melba, Page, Scullin, Spence, Strathnairn and Weetangera. Those suburbs make up the Belconnen area as the ABS draws it, which had 106,061 residents at the 2021 Census. The suburb called Belconnen is home to the town centre, and this page covers the district as a whole.

The ACT Government’s Belconnen District Strategy notes that tree canopy is higher in the established suburbs than in the newer ones, and that larger blocks with space for trees add to the district’s green network.

That splits most work into two kinds. In the older suburbs, it is garden renewal: thinning overgrown shrubs, replacing worn lawn and rebuilding beds around trees that are worth keeping. On new blocks in suburbs such as Strathnairn and Macnamara, it is a first garden on bare ground, where shade trees, turf and paths all have to be planned from scratch. Lifting the soil level in beds also keeps roots out of the wettest layer during a long winter.

Once a garden is built, regular garden maintenance keeps the mulch topped up and the weeds down while new planting settles in.

Not every part of a Belconnen yard suits real grass. Under trees, on narrow side strips, or where nobody wants to mow, there are other options:

• Native beds that need little water once established.
• Gravel or paved areas for paths and outdoor seating.
• Artificial turf where a green surface is wanted without mowing.

Most landscaping across Belconnen mixes these, keeping real lawn where it gets sun and is actually used. A small, healthy lawn is easier to look after than a large patchy one, and it leaves more room for planting and shade.
