Earthmoving in Kingston

Earthmoving in Kingston usually happens in small spaces, between buildings, behind cottages or inside a shared courtyard. ACT House & Landscaping Maintenance digs, levels and trenches on residential and commercial sites throughout the suburb. We work across Canberra, and this page sets out what suits a Kingston site, what has to happen before digging, and how to book.

Earthmoving in Kingston: working in tight spaces

Kingston has been heavily redeveloped. The ACT Government’s Kingston heritage page notes that its Garden City precinct is the only part of Kingston’s housing that has not been redeveloped for strata-titled units. That leaves two kinds of site: older cottage blocks in the precinct, and grounds around unit buildings.

Neither leaves much room for a large machine, so earthmoving in Kingston is mostly compact work. Jobs that suit this setting include:

  • Short drainage trenches where water collects against a wall or in a courtyard.
  • Levelling a small yard before paving or turf.
  • Footings for a fence, retaining wall or garden structure.
  • Digging out old garden beds or broken concrete.

Choosing a compact machine

On a narrow site, a small excavator is often the right tool. Our mini digger service can come with an operator, and the machine is built for tight access through gates and along side paths. A smaller machine also means less wear on paths and lawn along the way in. Where the issue is water, the drainage excavation page explains how the trench and pipe work is planned.

For the wider picture, including site preparation and larger digs, see our excavation services. If you are not sure which machine an earthmoving job in Kingston needs, describe the site and the narrowest point of access when you call.

What has to happen before digging

Excavation is regulated work. Safe Work Australia says that before excavation work starts, the person running it must contact Before You Dig Australia to check where electrical cables and other assets are, and must make sure any asbestos that may be disturbed is removed by a competent person.

That matters on a site where services run close together, as they often do around unit buildings. Tell us what you know about pipes, cables and older structures on the land when you first call, and share any plans or strata records that show where they run.

Shared land and approvals

In a strata complex, the ground outside each unit is usually common property. The owners corporation or its manager normally decides on work there, so confirm who can approve a job before booking. Neighbours on shared walls and fences will also want to know when a machine is coming.

Inside the heritage precinct, check what applies before any digging that changes the front of a block, such as a new path, wall or driveway.

Common questions

Can you get a machine into a courtyard with no vehicle access?

Often, yes, if there is a gate or path wide enough for a compact machine. Measure the narrowest point on the way in and tell us when you call.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. Weekends are fine, within our 8am to 8pm hours. In a unit complex, check any rules about working hours before choosing a day.

Will the area be cleaned up afterwards?

Yes. We tidy the site before leaving, and you can tell us beforehand where any spare soil should go.

Do you need a site plan before quoting?

It helps. A plan or a simple sketch showing the area, any known pipes and the way in lets us judge the machine and the access before the visit.
