Choosing a landscaper in Canberra usually comes down to trust: who turns up, who does the work and whether the result matches the plan you agreed. ACT House & Landscaping Maintenance is led by Abs, whom clients describe as always on site and hands on. The business has over 20 years of experience, holds a licence for structural landscaping and is fully insured. This page is about the people and how they run a job, not a list of services.
Abs leads the landscaping work himself. Richard Voigt, whose front and backyard had become run down and overgrown, wrote that Abs “gave it a new life” and was “always on-site and hands on to make sure the job gets down to quality”.
Larger jobs bring in more of the team. On one property, Abs and his crew built paving on a sloping site with new retaining walls while George and Youssef replaced an old deck with a new Merbau deck. The client noted that both teams worked together on the same site very effectively. Whatever the size of the job, you also have a dedicated project manager who keeps you informed at each stage.
More background on the business is on our about us page, and the full range of work is on the landscaping overview.
Whoever you hire, ask any landscaper in Canberra the same things: what they are insured and licensed for, and who will actually be on site each day. Our article on hiring landscapers lists other factors to weigh up, such as local knowledge and the range of services.
A good job is mostly decided before the first spadeful. We look at the site with you, agree what is being built, and check what is in the ground and around it. Large trees matter here. The ACT’s tree protection laws cover any tree on private land that stands 8 metres or more, spreads a canopy at least 8 metres across, or measures 1 metre or more around the trunk at a height of 1.4 metres. Digging, paving or building in a protected tree’s tree protection zone (the area beneath its canopy plus a 2-metre band beyond the canopy edge) can only start once the ACT Government has approved it.
After that, the work follows a set order so nothing is dug up twice, you hear from your project manager as it goes, and the site is left tidy at the end. Photos of finished projects are in our gallery.
Past clients are the best guide to how a Canberra landscaper works. Alex MacArthur described “great attention to detail and very thorough upfront communication” on a garden clean-up and maintenance job. Mark G called us “a great team who go above and beyond” after a very difficult ivy removal, noting that the surrounding areas were tidied too. Read the complete reviews on our reviews page.
Clients regularly mention Abs being on site. Ask when you call who will run your project day to day, so you know who to expect.
Yes. A single path, one garden bed or a one-off tidy-up is worth a call too. Give us a rough idea of the work on the phone, and we can talk through how it would be done.
We work right across Canberra, on homes and commercial sites alike. If you are unsure whether your suburb is covered, call 0406 700 400 and ask.
