Landscaping & Maintenance Woden & Molonglo

This page covers two districts with very different gardens: Woden, built mostly in the 1960s and 1970s, and Molonglo Valley, the newest of Canberra’s nine districts. ACT House & Landscaping Maintenance works in both, from Curtin and Mawson to Coombs, Wright and Denman Prospect, and in neighbouring Deakin. Landscaping and maintenance in Woden tends to be about mature trees and older homes, while Molonglo blocks are compact and the planting is young. Below are our suburb pages, local guides and the services behind them.

Suburbs in Woden and Molonglo Valley

The ACT Government’s Woden District Strategy describes a district built around the Woden town centre, with Canberra Hospital in Garran, group centres at Curtin and Mawson, and nine local centres. Its suburbs include Farrer, Hughes, Isaacs, Lyons, Pearce, Phillip and Torrens.

According to the Molonglo Valley District Strategy, that district lies between Belconnen and Weston Creek. Coombs, Wright and Denman Prospect were its first suburbs, Whitlam is under way, and the suburb of Molonglo will hold the main commercial area. Deakin is in neither district: the Inner South District Strategy places it on that district’s western edge. Its pages are grouped here with Woden all the same.

Landscaping and maintenance in Woden and Molonglo

In Woden, separate houses made up 58% of dwellings in 2021, down from around 70% in 2016 as apartments rose near the town centre. Many gardens have had decades to grow, so pruning, renovating tired beds and working around big trees are common jobs. Our gardening services page covers that ongoing care.

Woden also has one of the higher shares of townhouses and other medium density homes, around 20% in 2021 against 17% across the ACT, so courtyard gardens and shared grounds come up often. Houses from the district’s early decades are now at the age where gutters, paintwork and fittings need regular attention, and our house maintenance team handles that upkeep alongside the garden.

Molonglo is the opposite. Medium density and apartment homes make up a much larger share of new housing there, blocks are more compact, and Wright had just 3% tree canopy cover in 2020 because its trees are still young. A small yard repays careful planning, which is where landscape design helps.

Local guides for both districts

Budgeting for a garden in an older suburb is the subject of our Curtin landscaping costs guide, which walks through design, earthmoving, hardscaping and planting. For a newer home, the Denman Prospect maintenance plan explains how a young garden on a compact block needs looking after differently from an established one. Read either before you call, and you will know which questions to ask about your own yard.

Common questions

Do you work in Whitlam and the other new Molonglo suburbs?

Yes. New suburbs are covered as homes are finished. Ring 0406 700 400, tell us the street and describe what the yard needs.

Can you work around a large established tree?

Yes, with care. Some large trees in Canberra are protected, so check the rules before any work near the trunk or roots, and tell us about the tree when you call.

Do you look after townhouse and unit grounds?

Yes. Shared grounds and business sites are part of our work, not just private gardens. Tell us whether an owners corporation or a manager signs off, and we will send the quote to them.
