Artificial Turf in Canberra

Artificial turf in Canberra suits spots where real grass struggles, or yards where you would rather not mow at all. ACT House & Landscaping Maintenance supplies and installs synthetic turf for homes and commercial properties, from preparing the ground to finishing the edges. Products differ in look, feel and construction, so the right one depends on where it is going and how it will be used. This page explains what a proper installation involves and how to choose between synthetic and natural grass.

What an artificial turf installation involves

The finish you see depends on the work underneath it. A typical artificial turf installation in Canberra follows these stages.

  1. Remove the existing surface

Old lawn, weeds and roots are dug out so the new surface can sit at the right level. On larger areas, this is earth moving work.

  2. Prepare and compact the base

A compacted base layer is spread, levelled and compacted so the turf stays flat and does not dip where people walk.

  3. Plan the drainage

Rain has to pass through the turf and the base and then drain away, so the levels are set to stop water pooling on top.

  4. Edge, lay and join

A firm edge holds the border in place. Rolls are laid in the same direction and the seams are joined so they do not show.

  5. Infill and finish

Some products take sand infill brushed into the fibres to weigh them down and help them stand up. The surface is then brushed and the site cleaned up.

Artificial turf in Canberra or natural grass?

Synthetic grass makes sense in heavily shaded corners, small courtyards and areas worn bare by foot traffic, or where nobody wants to mow. It also keeps the same colour through a cold Canberra winter, when real grass slows down and can look tired. It still needs some care, though: leaves have to be cleared and the pile brushed up from time to time.

Natural grass is the better fit where you want a cooler surface in summer, living soil and a lawn that can be repaired rather than replaced. If you are leaning that way, our lawn care page covers mowing, feeding and new turf. Many yards end up with a mix of both, which is worth working out at the design stage.

Synthetic turf on a nature strip

The nature strip in front of your house is public land, even though you look after it. ACT City Services lists synthetic turf among the nature strip uses that require approval, and notes that this land often holds infrastructure for telecommunications, energy, water and wastewater. If you would like the turf to continue past your front boundary, apply for approval before any work is done there.

Common questions

Which artificial turf products do you install?

It depends on the area and how it will be used. Call 0406 700 400 with the size of the space and what it is for, and we will talk through the options that suit your yard.

Can artificial turf go on a slope?

A slope changes how the base is built and how water runs off it, so it needs to be seen before anyone can say. Tell us about the fall of the ground when you call.

Can you clear old pavers or edging at the same time?

Yes. Mention anything else that has to go, such as old pavers, garden edging or a worn-out path, when you book, so it can be cleared while the base is prepared.

Do you install synthetic turf for businesses?

Yes. We install artificial turf for Canberra businesses as well as homes, at entries, courtyards and other outdoor areas.
