Lawn mowing in Canberra: cut, edges and clean-up

A good mow is about height as much as frequency. Cutting too short weakens the grass and lets weeds in, so we mow at a height that suits the lawn and the time of year. Mowing little and often is gentler on the grass than letting it grow long and cutting it hard.

Each visit includes edging and trimming along paths, driveways and garden beds, and around trees and fences where the mower cannot reach. Clippings are cleared off hard surfaces before we leave. If the garden beds need attention too, our gardening services can be booked for the same visit.

Lawn care in Canberra beyond the mow

Fertilising

Feeding at the right times of year keeps the colour even and helps a thin lawn thicken up.

Weed control

Weeds are treated before they spread through the lawn and set seed.

Aeration

Compacted soil starves roots of air and water. Aerating opens it up so moisture and feed reach the root zone.

Overseeding

Thin or patchy areas are sown with fresh seed to fill the gaps.

Turf installation

When a lawn is too far gone to bring back, we lay new turf. Our article on lawn renovation explains when repair is enough and when replacement is the better path.

How the seasons change lawn care

Canberra winters are cold. Bureau of Meteorology averages for Canberra Airport put the mean July minimum at 0.1°C, with June and August only a little warmer. Grass grows slowly in those months, so mowing eases off over winter, and keeping leaves off the lawn matters as much as the cut.

Growth picks up in spring once the hard frosts have passed, and that is the usual time for feeding, repairs and overseeding. Summer is about regular mowing without cutting too low, which leaves the grass better able to cope with the heat.

When grass will not grow

Some spots never hold a lawn, whatever you do: deep shade, heavy foot traffic or ground that stays wet. Water that pools after rain usually points to a drainage problem, and drainage excavation fixes the cause so new seed or turf is not wasted. For corners where real grass keeps failing, artificial turf is an option worth comparing.

Common questions

Does the award mean you only work in South Canberra?

No. The award recognised our work in South Canberra, but we provide lawn mowing across Canberra. Call to check your suburb.

How often should my lawn be mown?

It depends on the grass and the season. Lawns need cutting far more often in spring and summer than in winter, and we can suggest a schedule once we have seen yours.

Do you mow commercial properties?

Yes. We mow for businesses and commercial sites as well as homes. Phone 0406 700 400 and describe the grounds.

Can you turf a new or bare block?

Yes. On a bare block the ground is levelled and prepared before the turf goes down, so the lawn sits even and drains properly. Tell us the size of the area and what is there now, and we will explain the steps for your site.
